BSCS BSc Computer Science

The BSc Computer Science is an online undergraduate degree offered by the University of London, with the curriculum designed and delivered academically by Goldsmiths' Department of Computing a department recognized for blending technical rigor with a creative, project-based teaching style. Rather than sitting in lecture halls, students learn through the Coursera platform, working alongside a global cohort while receiving structured tutor support throughout.

Program Overview

The degree is built to prepare students for the realities of the modern tech industry, combining strong technical foundations programming, mathematics, algorithms with practical, portfolio-building experience and softer skills like teamwork and project management. Goldsmiths' teaching philosophy treats computer science as something learned by doing: students work through hands-on projects rather than purely theoretical coursework, and by the end of the programme, they walk away with a body of work they can show directly to employers. Students can either follow the general degree path or specialise early into one of several focused career tracks.

Eligibility may vary depending on your program and scholarship type.

Program Highlights

Core Learning Areas

Beyond the shared foundation in programming and computer science theory, students can direct their learning toward one of seven specialised areas:

Data Science

working with large-scale data, analytics, and data-intensive systems

Games Development

game design, 3D graphics, and interactive entertainment

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

building intelligent, data-driven systems

Physical Computing and the Internet of Things

hardware that senses and interacts with the real world

User Experience (UX)

designing interfaces and systems around real human needs

Virtual Reality

building immersive digital environments

Web and Mobile Development

building websites and applications for phones and the web

Program Structures

1

Level 4

lays the groundwork with core computing fundamentals programming basics, discrete and computational mathematics, how computers work, and foundational algorithms.

2

Level 5

builds toward more advanced technical practice, covering object-oriented programming, software design, databases, computer security, and professional practice for computer scientists.

3

Level 6

is where the degree becomes specialised. Students following the general track choose electives freely across any specialism; those following a specific track (e.g., Machine Learning and AI, or UX) complete a fixed set of modules tied to that specialism, plus one elective from elsewhere. Every student finishes with a substantial Final Project.

A full-time pace involves roughly 5–6 study hours per week per module, with each module running about 22 weeks.
